Overview

There are two ways to connect a computer to a cable modem for Cox High Speed Internet service: an Ethernet cable modem to an Ethernet port in a computer, and a USB cable modem to a USB port in a computer. Some  modems are Ethernet only. The following information is for USB connections only and does not apply to Cable Modem Gateways.

Important: USB 2.0 is required in order to achieve the maximum speed capabilities of a DOCSIS 3.0 modem.

Items needed for a USB installation:

• A USB port (D Connector) on the cable modem
• A USB port in the computer and a USB cable
• A surge protected wall outlet or surge protector strip
• A USB driver CD
  
  

Installation Steps

1. Connect the cable coax line that is dedicated to the cable modem to the cable connector on the cable modem and then to the wall unit.
2. Plug the transformer into a grounded, surge-protected 110VAC household outlet.
3. Connect the power transformer to the modem's power connector.
   

   Most cable modems are "on" all the time and do not have a switch. If the modem has a power switch, turn on the modem, and wait for the modem to synch with the system. This may take several minutes. A modem will indicate when synchronization occurs.

4. Insert the USB driver CD as prompted by the operating system, and follow the on-screen instructions as prompted.
5. Plug one end of the USB cable into the USB port on the cable modem. Connect the other end of the USB cable into the computer's USB port, which may be found on either the front or the back of the computer.
   
   All steps complete.
