Overview

Setting up Cox Digital Telephone service is easy, and can be completed in a few minutes. Use the steps below to get started.

1

Prepare for set up.

  • Confirm the contents of your kit.
  • Turn off your computer.

You must use the included Cox Digital Telephone® modem for both your Cox High Speed Internet® and Cox Digital Telephone services.

2

Insert battery in to Cox Digital Telephone modem.

  1. Insert battery into the digital telephone modem battery slot.
  2. Prepare for Digital Telephone Modem set up by doing the following:

New Cox High Speed Internet customers proceed to the next section.

  • Completely disconnect your existing cable modem and any associated cables.
  • Your new digital telephone modem will be used for both your Cox High Speed Internet┬« and Cox Digital Telephone service.
  • If using a wireless router, temporarily disconnect it and reconnect after the set up process is complete.

If you are currently leasing a cable modem from Cox, contact your local Cox office for return procedures in order to avoid additional charges.

3

Set up Digital Telephone modem.

Use the following steps to set up your Digital telephone modem:

  1. Remove the white sticker from back of the digital telephone modem. Once removed, the Tel 1/2 port will be exposed.
  2. Connect one end of the ethernet cable to the port labeled Ethernet on the back of the digital telephone modem, and the other end to your computer's ethernet port.
  3. Connect one end of the coax cable to the cable wall jack, and the other end to the port labeled Cable on the back of the Digital Telephone modem.
  4. Connect the power cord to the port on the Digital Telephone modem labeled Power, and the other end to an electrical outlet or surge protector.
4

Connect Cordless Phone to Digital Telephone Modem

Connect one end of the telephone cord into the port labeled Tel 1/2 on the back of the digital telephone modem, and the other end to a Cordless Phone.

DO NOT plug the telephone cord into a phone wall jack.  Use only the Tel 1/2 on the back of the modem. In the event of a power outage, you will need to replace your cordless phone with a corded phone in the Tel 1/2 port of the digital telephone modem.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter any problems after completing the Self Install, use the following quick fixes.

I have plugged everything in and the setup screen is not appearing.

  1. Verify that the power light on your Digital Telephone modem is lit.
  2. Review the connections.
  3. Make sure you have launched your web browser.
  4. Restart the modem by inserting a paper-clip or thin object into the hole on the back of the modem labeled Reset.

I have walked through the setup and do not have a dial tone.

  1. The telephone should not be plugged into the landline phone jack.
  2. If moving your telephone number from another carrier, check the activation date indicated during the setup process.
  3. Make sure the cordless telephone is charged and plugged into an electrical outlet.

The line has static.

Make sure the cable connections are tight.

I only have one cable wall jack for my TV, Internet and home phone service.

  1. Connect the existing coax cable from the cable wall jack to the splitter In connector.
  2. Next, connect the two included coax cables to the splitter Out connectors, and then:

    • Connect one coax cable to the existing TV connection or cable box
    • Connect one coax cable to the port labeled Cable on the Digital Telephone Modem.

If you are unable to resolve any of the above problems, or you are having a problem that is not listed, call a Cox customer service representative.

All steps complete.
