Citadel is a Trojan horse that steals confidential information from the computers it compromises. Examples of the stolen information are:

Citadel can be used for "ransom - ware" by locking the computer and forcing the owner to pay the hackers to unlock the device.
There are many forms and versions of this malicious software and no utility can effectively detect and remove all versions of this software from all operating systems at this time. Cox recommends the following free tools as they may be effective in removing the malicious software:
- For Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 refer to Microsoft Security Scanner.
- For all Windows Operating Systems refer to Norton Power Eraser.
Choose the removal tool that best suits your needs and scan all computers that are connected to your cable modem.
