Solution

To connect all of the components, you will need the following:

  • 1 wired or wireless router
  • 1 cable modem
  • 2 Ethernet cables
  • 1 coaxial cable
  • Power cords for the router and cable modem
  • Ethernet card installed in the computer

Disconnect the AC power from the cable modem and router, and shut down the primary computer.

Connect one end of the coaxial cable to the cable modem, and connect the other end of the cable to the cable wall outlet dedicated to your cable Internet service.

Connect the cable modem to AC power.

Note: The front panel LED will light, indicating that power has been supplied to the cable modem.

Most cable modems do not have a switch and are on all the time. If your cable modem has a power switch, turn on the modem and wait a few minutes for the modem to synchronize with the system. The modem will indicate when synchronization has occurred.

From the Ethernet port on the cable modem, connect a Category 5 Ethernet cable to the Wide Area Network (WAN) port of the router.

Connect the router to AC power.

Note: The front panel LED will light, indicating that power has been supplied to the router.

From port 1 on the rear of the router, connect one end of a Category 5 Ethernet cable, and then connect the opposite end to the Ethernet port of the primary computer.

Turn on the primary computer.

Note: The Ethernet 1 LED on the front of the router will light, indicating that the connection to the computer has been properly made. This LED flashes when data is sent or received by the router.

All steps complete.
