While there are several different options for connecting a computer to a TV, which one you select is based on both the quality of image you want to receive and what type of ports are available for use.

HDMI

HDMI is currently the highest quality connection available, and combines both video and audio over a single cable. Most HDTVs will have this connection, however your laptop may not as well as older model HDTVs may not have it. Standard definition TVs do not have this connection type.

DVI

DVI is a long established industry standard, so your computer and an HDTV should both have it. Again, a standard-definition TV likely won't support a DVI connection. If you want sound with a DVI connection, you will need a separate audio cable. Connect an audio cable from the headphones output of your laptop to the red and white audio input of your TV.

VGA

VGA, or Video Graphics Array, is another commonly found connection on both computers and HDTVs. Just like DVI, VGA does not carry an audio signal. Use the same method as above for connecting a stereo audio cable. 

S-Video

Some laptops and most TVs, including standard definition televisions,  have an S-Video port.  As with DVI, you will need a separate audio cable if you want sound. Use the same method as above for connecting a stereo audio cable.

Note: S-Video is generally not suitable for high-definition video signals. HDMI or DVI cables are better options for hooking up to an HDTV.

Once you have selected the type of cable to use, follow these steps to connect your computer to the TV.

Connect one end of the cable to your computer and the other to the TV.

On the TV, select the appropriate input assignment for your selected cable.

If necesssary, select the appropriate output and resolution on your computer.

For Windows:

Go to the Control Panel and select Display.

For Mac OS X:

Go to System Preferences and select Displays.
