Adapters

Each computer that will be on your home network needs a network adapter. There are two types of Ethernet adapters:

• Wired Connectivity includes Ethernet and USB connections. Most computers have an Ethernet Connection; however you should always refer to your computer documentation for clarification. If there is none, a USB to Ethernet adapter can be used.  
• Wireless Connectivity includes both internal wireless adapters and external wireless adapters. External USB Wireless adapters are available at Cox and can be used to add wireless connectivity to those computers without internal wireless, or in place of internal wireless, to update to newer and more effective Wireless networking.
  

Note: Each operating system and network adapter has its own installation procedure, including the installation of the drivers. Follow the directions that came with your network adapter to install the drivers.

Cables

Connections between computers on a network are made with Ethernet cables. These cables have ends on them called RJ-45 connectors. Ethernet networks require CAT5, CAT5e, or CAT6 cables. You will need an Ethernet adapter for each of your computers, plus one to connect the cable modem to the hub or router.

Hubs and Routers

When two or more computers are networked, a hub or router is needed. If you use a hub to connect your computers to the Internet, as opposed to using a router, you will need to order Multiple Computer Access. To learn how to order Multiple Computer Access, go to Add an Additional Computer.

Once you have installed the network adapters on the computers that will be on your home network, you can connect them to your hub or router. Configuration
