After the cable modem is successfully registered on the network, the Power, Receive, Send, and Online indicators illuminate continuously to indicate that the cable modem is online and fully operational. For more details, refer to the Modem Lights section.

The Motorola SBG6580 has the following ports available on the back of the modem:
- ETHERNET - Four ports connect to the Ethernet port on your computer or home network.
- USB - Connects to selected client devices.
- RESET - Used to reset the gateway.
- CABLE - Connects to the cable wall outlet.
- POWER - Connects the gateway to the power adapter.
