Summary

This article provides the steps to use the Netgear Resource CD and the Netgear router to install Cox Home Networking service using a Cox supported Windows operating system.

Solution

Overview

To begin router installation, the computer should:

  • Be connected to a Cox approved cable modem
  • Have an active Internet connection via an Ethernet connection
  • Have a working CD ROM drive

When using Windows Vista or Windows 7, additional windows may display. Click Continue when the operating system requests permissions throughout the installation process.

Insert the Netgear Resource CD into the CD ROM drive.

Result: The CD launches automatically.

Click the Setup link.

Result: The Netgear Smart Wizard Resource CD welcome message displays.

Click the Next button.

Result: The Preparation page displays listing the guidelines and requirements for the installation process.

Review the Preparation guidelines, then click the Next button.

Result: The Current Setup page displays which detects the current setup. Once the detection is complete, the Shortcut for Experts page displays.

Click the Next button to continue with detailed instructions.

Result: The Router Stand page displays which includes instructions on how to install the router stand hardware to the router.

Attach the stand to the router, then click the Next button.

Result: The Modem page displays.

Turn off the modem and unplug the power cord, then click the Next button.

Result: The Install Router page displays.

Unplug the Ethernet cable from the cable modem and leave the other end plugged in to the PC, then click the Next button.

Result: The Cable Connections page displays.

Insert the Ethernet Cable from the PC into Ethernet port 1, then click the Next button.

Result: The Cable Connections page displays.

Insert the Ethernet Cable from the cable modem into the Internet port on the router, then click the Next button.

Result: The Modem Connection page displays.

Insert the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet (LAN) port on the cable modem, then click the Next button.

Result: The Power-On Sequence page displays.

Turn the cable modem back on and verify that the modem status lights are lit, then click the Next button.

It can take up to two minutes for the modem to complete the connection to the Cox network.

Result: The Power-On Sequence page displays.

Plug in the power adapter for the router to an electrical outlet, then click the Next button.

Result: The Power-On Sequence page displays.

Connect the power adapter to the router, then click the Next button.

Result: The Netgear Smart Wizard Installation Assistant verifies router connections and communications, then checks for Internet connection. Once complete, the Network Security page displays.

In the Wireless Name (SSID) field, change the default SSID, then click the Next button.

Result: The Network Security page displays the default wireless security in use along with the router's wireless passphrase.

In the Wireless Passphrase field, change the default passphrase, then click the Next button.

Note: For security purposes, the default wireless security, WPA-WPA2 is selected. Write down the new passphrase and attach it to the router. You will need the  SSID and wireless key/passphrase if you want to connect other wireless devices.

Result: The router configuration completes and the Register page displays.

Enter the information in the fields, then click the Next button.

Result: The Netgear Smart Wizard router settings page displays and the router settings are saved to the PC desktop in the Router_Setup.html file for future reference.

Note: The Smart Wizard will ask if you want to change the login name and password for the router. If you change this information, write down the new login name and password and attach it to the router. If the router's settings need to be changed in the future, you will need this information to login.

Click the Finished button.
