(Undated) -- The longtime former executive director of Save the Bay, Rhode Island's largest environmental organization, has been appointed regional administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Curt Spalding was at the helm of Save the Bay from 1990 until he stepped down last year. The announcement of his appointment was made yesterday afternoon by EPA administrator Lisa Jackson. In a prepared statement, Spalding said he looks forward to working with the EPA team in New England to confront the environmental challenges faced by the region. The regional administrator position has been vacant for several months since the departure of Robert Varney who left for a private sector job. [[Watch for updates]]
