(Los Angeles, CA) -- The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Friday to ban the controversial practice of declawing cats. Council members described it as unnecessary and animal cruelty. The vote comes despite the state Legislature's vote earlier this year which bars local governments from banning the procedure starting January 1st. City Councilman Paul Koretz said, quote, "I don't think we should allow people at the state level dictate to us our local actions." The "Los Angeles Times" reports the council will take a final vote on the measure November 17th. Earlier this week the Beverly Hills City Council approved a similar ordinance.
