Gay teens’ responses to Tulsa survey reveal risk for suicide

TULSA — Ben Crittenden was not shocked by a survey suggesting nearly 40 percent of gay, lesbian or bisexual young Tulsans have attempted suicide.

"It doesn’t really surprise me,” the Catoosa High School junior said.

"Coming from my own experience, before I came out I had thoughts of suicide because I wanted to be accepted in the world,” Crittenden said.

Crittenden was one of about 150 young people who filled out an informal online survey sponsored by Tulsa Reaches Out, an organization that promotes the social service needs of the members of Tulsa’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning community.

He said he realized he was gay at age 13 and came out at age 15.

School bus assembly rolls in to Tulsa from Arkansas

"The market is very, very slow and school districts aren’t ordering many buses,” said Roy Wiley, a spokesman for IC Corp.’s parent company, Warrenville, Ill.-based Navistar Inc.

The closure affects up to 477 employees in Conway, he said, and the plant could start layoffs as early as Jan.

The three teachers toured Norman schools Monday and Tuesday, visiting classrooms and talking to teachers to learn about how the public education system works here.

The look of schools and how teachers approach lessons is different here than in Japan, said Katsumasa Watai, one of the exchange teachers.

The classrooms and hallways in Norman schools are very colorful with lots of displays, he said.

He also noticed teachers are integrating different subjects into one lesson.
