Jenks Students Place in National Video Competition

Three Jenks High School students won top awards in C-SPAN's 2009 "StudentCam' national video documentary competition. The competition was open to all middle school and high school students and participants were asked to produce a five to eight minute documentary focusing on a specific topic. This year, the topic was "A message to the new president: What is the most urgent issue for the new president to address after taking office and why?"
In May, C-SPAN officials visited Jenks High School to honor second place winner, Sheema Golbaba and third place winners, Kenzie Clark and Alexia Dickey with an award ceremony and a visit from the C-SPAN Civics Bus. Sheema Golbaba was awarded a $1,500 check for her second prize winning video, The U.S. and Iran: Force or Diplomacy?, a documentary about United States/Iranian relations and Kenzie Clark and Alexia Dickey were honored with a $750 check for their third prize winning documentary, Crossing New Borders, a video about immigration. All three students are 11th graders and students of Clifton Rapheal.

"Coming off a historic election, students were eager to express their views to the new president and did so in record numbers," said Joanne Wheeler, C-SPAN Vice President of Education Relations. "Over 1,900 students from 41 states, the District of Columbia and Guam submitted nearly 1,000 entries, marking a 300% increase from 2008."
"Cox would like to congratulate Sheema, Kenzie and Alexia on their award-winning video entries," said Christine Martin, Director of Communications. "Cable is committed to offer its resources to teachers in the classroom to expand the learning opportunities for our students through initiatives like StudentCam. Education is a key component to Cox's mission and we are committed to continue these efforts to enhance the education experience of our students."
