VA Democrats Pledge To Work With Incoming Republican Governor

11-07-2009 04:42 AM EST | By ###Erika Kane/rm WDC) MD) VA) TX)
(Washington, DC) -- Virginia Democratic Party leaders are pledging to work with incoming Republican Governor Bob McDonnell to do the work of the Commonwealth. Leading Democrats say the serious economic problems facing the state demand bipartisan solutions, but according to the "Washington Post" they also said that "pragmatic cooperation" is the only way to get back into the good graces of voters. U.S. Senator Mark Warner is quoted as saying "we got walloped on Tuesday. You can't deny that." The former governor says he had a lengthy conversation with governor-elect McDonnell this week who spoke a lot about his plans for jobs and the economy. Warner says time to "check the D and R hats at the door, and it's time to work together." McDonnell spokesman Tucker martin says the incoming governor says he wants to work with the Democrat-controlled Senate and he will look for common ground. Martin says the foremost goal is creating jobs and getting the economy going. He adds there aren't "Republican and Democratic jobs and schools and roads. There are just jobs and schools and roads."
