Cox Communications New Orleans paid tribute to 96 student heroes who lead meaningful, productive lives, while working very hard to overcome personal adversities at its 17th Annual Cox Inspirational Heroes Program on Wednesday April 29, 2009.

Over the span of this 17 year program, Cox has recognized 2,700 amazing students (K-12) who have made overwhelming achievements despite their physical, emotional, psychological or social challenges faced on a daily basis.  Challenges include: academic difficulties; physical challenges, mental/emotional challenges; serious illness; family adversities; substance abuse; cultural transitions; language transitions; and behavioral disorders.

Each spring, all public, private and parochial schools in the parishes of Jefferson, Orleans, St. Bernard and St. Charles nominate one (1) student hero from within their school.

The hundreds of guests at the recognition program included Cox senior management, employee volunteers, area superintendents, administrators, educators, parents and family members.  All heroes came up on stage individually as their personal bio's were read aloud explaining why they were chosen as student or civic hero.  Each person honored received a hero certificate of merit, a souvenir program and a Hero Gift Pack. Including a MP3 player and a Cox Conserves reusable aluminum water bottle.

"What a wonderful feeling it is to know that there are students in our schools that get up every morning and approach the day with confidence, pride and hope.  We can all look back at the small problems we have faced in our lives that don't even compare to what these heroes go through just to start each day.  They are all inspirations to us on how we should rethink our own lives." stated Brad Grundmeyer, Director of Public & Government Affairs, Cox Communications New Orleans. "This recognition program also highlights the silent heroes, their families, relatives and friends who have had to deal with the most challenging situation we've ever faced."

A complete parish, public and/or private listing of heroes is available upon request.
