Tech Tips: Home Network

Home wireless networks provide the Internet to everyone in your house – from the den, to the basement to the backyard. Listen to the pros give their tips on setting up and safeguarding your home network.

Home Networking Tips, Tricks and Links

N is where it’s at for home WiFi.
To get the most from your home’s wireless network, Cox Field Service Representatives, our on-site tech experts, recommend the wireless N broadband router. The N router earned this high praise by providing a wide range of wireless coverage and supporting the quick Internet speeds you desire.

Protect your home wireless network.
A home wireless network provides the Internet to everyone in your house – from the den, to the basement to the backyard. But you don’t want to leave your wireless connection open, or unprotected, to anyone nearby who you don’t know. To protect your family’s Internet experience, make sure to secure your wireless network so that only the people in your home can connect to it.

Using WiFi with your home’s entertainment system.
A home network isn't just for computers and laptops. Many of the newer models of TVs, Blu-ray and DVD players, smartphones and more are WiFi-enabled. This means you can easily display vacation pics and videos saved on your laptop or smartphone on the TV in your den.

Problems connecting to your WiFi?
Can’t connect to your home wireless network? There could be a number of reasons why this is happening. But before asking for assistance, our Cox Field Service Representatives recommend you try this little “trick” first: Start by unplugging your modem and wireless router. Next, plug the modem in first, wait a couple of minutes and then plug in the router. In most cases, that should do the trick.

If that doesn’t do it, check to make sure that the wireless switch on your laptop is switched to on. The location of this switch differs for each model – and in some cases depends on pressing a combination of keys – so make it a priority to locate it on your laptop. If you’re still having problems connecting to your wireless network, contact Cox.
