Cox Communications believes its customers expect it to engage in socially and environmentally responsible behavior
Rising energy costs and a failing ecosystem are forcing many companies to evaluate how they handle their most basic operations. Since Cox Enterprises Chairman and CEO Jim Kennedy announced “Cox Conserves” in 2007, Cox New England has stepped up to meet his challenge of reducing the company’s energy consumption by 20 percent by 2017.
Cox Conserves encourages its employees, vendors and customers to participate in environmentally-conscious practices to reduce energy consumption and promote sustainability.
In New England, Cox has adapted several ‘green’ initiatives that illustrate how far its commitment to environmental stewardship extends:
• A full-circle composting program that uses all paper, cardboard, plastics and food products that pass through the cafeteria, which serves more than 625 meals per day. The plates, trays and cups used in its cafeteria are made of 100% recycled fiber and are fully compostable and will be used on the grounds of its West Warwick office.
• The transition of its fleet to hybrid vehicles, which is expected to save the company 400 gallons of gas per vehicle per year.
• A new advanced lighting and HVAC control system automatically shuts down portions of its headquarters during off-hours. This equipment is expected to yield a 30% energy savings.
• A recycling program that exceeds industry standards and state mandates for corporations as it includes plastics 1 through 7. Paper, plastic and aluminum are regularly recycled at the company’s headquarters; but Cox is also salvaging aluminum, cardboard, obsolete receivers, remotes, steel, copper, and galvanized metal at its New England distribution center.
• Earlier this year, Cox distributed reusable cups to its employees to help eliminate nearly 140,000 drinking cups from our premises in one year alone.
• More than $700,000 has been reinvested in the company’s operations since 2006, allowing the Company to expand its recycling initiatives and invest in new and advanced technology for customers.
• More than 300 tons of waste has been diverted from the Central Landfill since 2006.
