About SMTP Authentication
SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It is the Internet standard language used to send email. SMTP Authentication requires that a user provide a valid username and password to authenticate before the user is allowed to send email. SMTP Authentication will help to improve security and reduce SPAM originating from the Cox network. It will also help to ensure that mail sent from the Cox network is from legitimate customers. This is critical to maintaining the integrity of the Cox network and our reputation with other large Internet and Email service providers.
From the Mail menu, select Preferences.
Click Accounts.
Select the email account.
Click Server Settings.
Complete the following Outgoing Mail Server settings:
- Check the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) box
- From the Authentication drop-down list, select Password
- Enter your email User Name and Password
Click OK.
Note: Port 465 is preferred and supports SSL; Port 587 is clear text.
Close the Account window.
Click Save when prompted to save the changes.
