Configuring Windows Mail to Send and Receive Email
Last Updated: Tue, 19 Apr 2011 > Related Articles
Summary
Follow these steps to configure Windows Mail to send and receive Cox email.
Solution
POP vs. IMAP
POP is the recommended incoming mail server for customers who will primarily use a mail client (i.e. Outlook, Windows Mail, Thunderbird, etc.) to receive email. However, if a customer also plans to regularly use a smartphone (i.e. Blackberry, Iphone, Android, etc.) or the Cox Business Email web interface to receive mail, then IMAP should be used.
Step 6 of this procedure will need to be configured differently if using IMAP. If you are configuring a smartphone, use the alternate Step 6 provided at the end of this article.
In Windows Mail, click the Tools menu and select Account.

Click Add.

Select E-mail Account and click Next.

Enter your name and click Next.

Enter your email address and click Next.

Enter the following server information:
- Select POP3 in the drop-down list
- Incoming mail is pop.coxmail.com
- Outgoing mail is smtp.coxmail.com
- Select Outgoing server requires authentication
Click Next.

Enter your email username and password.
Click Next.

Click Finish.

Select the email account.
Click Properties.

On the Servers tab, under Outgoing Mail Server, click Settings.

Select the Use same settings as my incoming mail server radio button.

On the Advanced tab, ensure that the ports are correct:
- Outgoing mail (SMTP) is 465
- Incoming mail (POP 3) is 995
- Select This server requires a secure connection (SSL) for both incoming and outgoing mail.
Click OK.
Configuring IMAP
If you will be using IMAP for your incoming mail, the screens in steps 6 and 12 should be configured as follows:
Enter the following server information:
- Select IMAP in the drop-down list
- Incoming mail is imap.coxmail.com
- Outgoing mail is smtp.coxmail.com
- Select Outgoing server requires authentication
Click Next

On the Advanced tab, ensure that the ports are correct.
- Outgoing mail (SMTP) is 465
- Incoming mail (IMAP) is 993
- Select This server requires a secure connection (SSL) for both incoming and outgoing mail
Click OK.
