Configuring the Thunderbird v.3 Email Client
Last Updated: Mon, 18 Apr 2011 > Related Articles
Summary
Learn how to configure Mozilla's Thunderbird email client.
Solution
POP vs. IMAP
POP is the recommended incoming mail server when you primarily use a mail client (i.e. Outlook, Windows Mail, Thunderbird, etc.) to receive email to your computer. However, if you also plans to regularly use a smartphone (i.e. Blackberry, Iphone, Android, etc.) or the Cox Business Email web interface to receive mail, then IMAP should be used. Instructions for both configurations are below.
Open Thunderbird.
From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.

Click the Account Actions button and select Add Mail Account.

Enter your email account details and click Continue.

Thunderbird will attempt to determine your account settings based on the domain portion of your email address. You can abort this by clicking Stop. In either case, the Mail Account Setup screen will appear.

Edit the server names and port information:
- Incoming is pop.coxmail.com
- Select POP in the first drop-down list
- The port for incoming mail (POP) is 995
Click Manual Setup.

Note: If you are configuring email for your smartphone, use IMAP configuration instead, outlined below.
Enter the correct outgoing server name and port information:
- Server name is smtp.coxmail.com
- Port is 465
- Select User name and password
- User Name is the customer's email address
- Select Use secure authentication
- Connection security is SSL/TLS
Click OK.

Click OK.
All steps complete.
If you are using IMAP for your incoming mail server, the Mail Account Setup screen in Step 6 should be configured as follows:
- Edit the server names and port information:
- Incoming is imap.coxmail.com
- Select IMAP in the first drop-down list
- The port for incoming mail (IMAP) is 993
- Select SSL/TLS in the second drop-down list
Click Manual Setup
