When your computer has been unable to generate an IP address and all other troubleshooting has failed, it may be possible to generate an IP address by disabling and enabling DHCP. In order to do this, you will have to set up a static IP address, and then change it back to dynamic.
- Click Start and select Control Panel.
- If in Classic View, double-click Network Connections. If in Category View, click on Network and Internet Connections and select Network Connections.
- Right-click on the Local Area Connection that is being used.
- Double-click Internet Protocol.
- Select "Use the following IP Address" and type in 192.168.0.2.
- Set the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0.
- Select "Use the following DNS Server addresses" and type in 127.0.0.1.
- Click OK, then click OK again.
- Restart the computer.
- Click Start, and select Control Panel.
- If in Classic View, double-click Network Connections. If in Category View, click on Network and Internet Connections and select Network Connections.
- Right-click on the Local Area Connection that is being used.
- Double-click Internet Protocol.
- Select "Obtain an IP Address automatically" and select "Obtain DNS server address automatically."
- Click OK then click OK again.
- Right-click the Local Area Connection and select Disable.
- Restart the computer.
- Click Start and select Control Panel.
- If in Classic View, double-click Network Connections. If in Category View, click on Network and Internet Connections and select Network Connections.
- Right-click the Local Area Connection and select Enable.
If your computer still has not generated an IP address, the NIC (Network Interface Card) may not be functioning properly and you should contact the NIC manufacturer.
