About SMTP Authentication

SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It is the Internet standard language used to send email. SMTP Authentication requires that a user provide a valid username and password to authenticate before the user is allowed to send email. SMTP Authentication will help to improve security and reduce SPAM originating from the Cox network. It will also help to ensure that mail sent from the Cox network is from legitimate customers. This is critical to maintaining the integrity of the Cox network and our reputation with other large Internet and Email service providers.

  1. From the Mail menu, select Preferences.

  2. Click Accounts.

  3. Select the account. From the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) drop-down list, select Edit Server List.

  4. Click the Advanced tab. From the Authentication Drop-down list, select Password.

  5. Enter the following account settings:
  • Select the Use default ports (25, 465, 587) radio button
  • Check the User Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) box
  • Enter the User Name and Password.
    Click OK.

Note: Port 465 is preferred and supports SSL. Port 587 is clear text.

  1. Close the Accounts window. Click Save when prompted to save the changes.
