Troubleshooting Slow Connection Speeds
Last Updated: Fri, 06 May 2011 > Related Articles
Summary
Troubleshooting help for when you can get online but are experiencing slow download speeds.
Solution
Symptom
Web pages are slow to open and downloads transfer slowly.
Cause
May be caused by physical problems with cable lines or by network issues.
Solutions
First, power cycle your network. To do this:
- Turn off all equipment starting with the computer(s) and working toward the wall - unplugging your router (if you use one), then unplugging your modem.
- Let all equipment sit for 30 seconds.
- Plug the modem back in and wait two minutes until the lights indicate it is synced.
- Plug the router back in.
- Turn on computer(s).
Second, disable your firewall. Consult your software documentation for instructions on how to do this. If disabling the firewall resolves the issue, check firewall settings to ensure that ping is enabled and reactivate it.
Third, check your physical connections. Cables to the modem or router and cabling between them may be loose or damaged. Replace damaged components and validate that all connections are secure.
