Configure SMTP Authentication in Outlook Express

Learn how to configure Outlook Express to send and receive Cox email.


About SMTP Authentication

SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It is the Internet standard language used to send email. SMTP Authentication requires that a user provide a valid username and password to authenticate before the user is allowed to send email. SMTP Authentication will help to improve security and reduce SPAM originating from the Cox network. It will also help to ensure that mail sent from the Cox network is from legitimate customers. This is critical to maintaining the integrity of the Cox network and our reputation with other large Internet and Email service providers.




Open Outlook Express.




From the Tools menu, select Account.




Select Account and click Properties.




On the Servers tab, select My server requires authentication.




Select Log on using. Enter the Account Name (your email address) and Password for the account.

Click OK.




On the Advanced tab, change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) port to 465 and select This server requires a secure connection (SSL).

Click OK.
