Last Updated: Fri, 22 Apr 2011 > Related Articles

If you are having trouble with your Cox Business Email account, here are some steps to troubleshoot your connection before calling tech support.

  • General tips for email issues:

Is your internet connection working? Always test your internet connection first. Your email will not work unless your internet connection is functioning properly.

Open your browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) and attempt to go to a site you know is always up such as

If you have no internet connection, then there's no email functionality.

  • Read the error message:

Email clients will usually give you a good indication of what is wrong, such as "incorrect password" or "Can not find host:".

These errors can assist you in discovering what is wrong. Even if they don't indicate what the solution is, make note of them so that when you call tech support, they can help pinpoint the issue.

  • Verify the settings in your email client:

Outlook Express
Outlook 2000
Outlook 2002
Outlook 2003
Netscape Mail

  • Test or verify your username and password:

Cox Business offers web mail for all customers that have an email account hosted on the Cox servers. Using this simple interface is an easy way to test your username and password.
Open your browser and go to Attempt to log in with your username and current password. If you are unable to log in, please call your local support tech to reset your password and further troubleshooting.

: Your username is your full email address with Cox Business.

  • Disable email anti-virus scanning:

Some anti-virus programs will setup their own POP (inbound) and SMTP (outbound) settings in order to scan for viruses in your email. While this is a good idea, it can confuse your email program and cause sending and receiving issues with your mail.

If you are having trouble sending or receiving email, turn off email scanning in your anti-virus program only. Once off, test your email again. If it works, then your email scanning is the issue. Contact your anti-virus manufacturer for assistance for this type of problem.

Note: All email hosted by Cox Business is scanned for viruses before it is delivered to your inbox and all outgoing mail is scanned before it is sent to the recipient.
