A Message from John Walsh
As our world becomes even more connected, the way we communicate and access information continues to expand. Today, parents are as likely to “talk” to their children via text messaging or e-mail as they are to chat over the once-traditional evening meal.
But this also means our kids are communicating with countless other friends, family and strangers – and try as you might, you can’t be watching over their shoulders during every encounter. Parents, be diligent and Take Charge! of how your kids communicate, and when and how they do it. From TV viewing to online gaming to Internet access to text messaging – the list is long, and your resolve must be strong.
Because no matter how busy you are or how many dangers lurk, their safety in this Digital Life is your responsibility. We must be aware of the content they are creating, reading, watching and sharing – and take proper steps to ensure that their communications are safe, fun and productive.
For more than six years, I have teamed up with Cox Communications to co-create and promote their program: Take Charge! Recently updated to reflect changes in technology and trends, Take Charge! is designed to help you create safe boundaries for your children’s mass media experiences – and to provide advice, tips and tools for navigating these activities safely.
Please take some time to explore this Take Charge! website and, more importantly, talk – face-to-face – with your kids to emphasize the importance of appropriately participating in these endeavors.
